i have a question that's been bugging me.
do the chinese christians/catholics celebrate chinese new year?
are they allowed to?
isn't chinese new year more of a buddhist/taoist/religions along these lines festival?
so they cannot celebrate right?
right or not?

ok lets argue bout this.. chinese christians ARE still chinese.. so they celebrate.. but they skip all the usual rituals of burning incense blah blah! u nv forget ur roots ma.. PLUS! even if they dun, they do it aniwae for the fun/gathering/ang baos! whats the harm? would god say no?? NO! aha.
but someone(a christian) told me that they're not supposed to! which makes sense because christians always tell us not to believe in superstitions and stuff. isn't the origins of cny rooted in superstition? or folklore. or whatever.
and another christian said that her church "celebrated" chinese new year by taking the tune of a cny song and incorporating their own lyrics and sang it. the lyrics were about giving thanks to god and stuff like that.
oh pls.. no offence to christians, but isn't believing in christianity and god superstitious too? so if we aren't christians we shouldn't celebrate christmas, thanksgiving, blah blah blah? wad century liao, just enjoy the holidays baby! haha.. with good intentions as well of cos..

1. Chinese New Year exists because they follow the Chinese lunar calendar, different from the Gregorian calendar which has Catholic origins. You can say that it's Buddhist/Taoist, but it's not unique to either. The Chinese follow/followed it not because they're Buddhist and/or Taoist, but because that was the calendar system adopted by their society. So it's more a cultural festival than anything else.
2. Chinese New Year existed and was celebrated in China before Christianity/Catholicism spread to that part of the world. When you're a minority group in a large population, and when your country (in other words, your whole world - because you don't know any other) celebrates Chinese New Year, and everyone around you does the same, it's pretty likely that you'd do the same. Then when it comes to Chinese diaspora, whether they celebrate Chinese New Year or not depends on their personal background and etc.
Whether individual Chinese-Christians celebrate Chinese New Year then boils down to personal preference and faith, I guess? Hence your Christian friends' accounts. After all, must take into account that there are dunnohowmany-types of Christian beliefs and branches, same for Catholicism.
Still...most of the festivities are something that's pretty secular, I think, especially the eating part, hahahha. The only thing that Christians/Catholics would shun is the astrology bits, I suppose.
Even so, nobody's a pure Chinese, or a pure Christian/Catholic, or a pure Taoist, or a pure anything these days. Festivals and holidays are becoming more and more secular (you not Christian you also celebrate Christmas, Valentine's Day, yada yada) and cultural practices are becoming a lot more diffused and rojak.
What people do (or not) all boils down to what they believe (or not), I guess. And if they don't want to celebrate CNY, then that's just more bak kwa for the rest of us to eat. :D

yep, thanks to globalisation, no identity is purely pure. HAHA the angmohs here also celebrate christmas and easter even when they are actually atheists. so no biggie. everyone just wants to take advantage of holidays lah. hahahah
